The Sympathetic Nervous System and Vascular Health | Drs. Anna Stanhewicz & Jody Greaney

Anna Stanhewicz, Ph.D., and Jody Greaney, Ph.D., FACSM, are scientists at Pennsylvania State University. They have been studying the process through which the sympathetic nervous system communicates with the vascular system during total body heating and cooling, particularly in aging adults.

As humans age, this communication process becomes less efficient and can cause an increase in cardiovascular risk. Drs. Stanhewicz and Greaney are studying this process in attempt to determine intervention strategies that may mitigate the cardiovascular risk.

An International Consensus Statement on Physical Activity and Mental Heath Just Released

Exercise and Sports Science Australia, American College of Sports Medicine, British Association of Sport and Exercise Science, and Sport and Exercise Science New Zealand collaborated to develop a brief statement titled The Role of Sport, Exercise, and Physical Activity in Closing the Life Expectancy Gap for People with Mental Illness.  The statement discusses the need for holistic treatment for those with mental illness including physical health care, which is often lacking when mental illness is the focus of treatment. We invite you to read the paper, which published in the Translational Journal of the America College of Sports Medicine, and share with your colleagues.

Consensus Statement Published from the 19th Annual Team Physician Consensus Conference

ACSM is pleased to announce the release of the annual Team Physician Consensus Conference statement, which is a blend of research evidence and expert consensus providing guidance and teaching tools for physicians working in the sports medicine field, regardless of geographical location or level of team or athlete.

The 2017 TPCC consensus statement focuses on Issues in the Female Athlete and covers a variety of topics related to the health of the female athlete.  We invite you to read the statement in either MSSE or CSMR.

The Female Athlete Triad

MYTH: It's "normal" for female athletes to lose their period, or stop menstruating.
REALITY: Amenorrhea due to working out is unhealthy.

Mary Jane De Souza, Ph.D., FACSM, and Nancy Williams, Sc.D., FACSM, both researchers and professors at Pennsylvania State University, have spent many years studying the Female Athlete Triad.

For Dr. Carter, regular physical activity is the catalyst to reach one’s full potential—mind, body and soul. His passions for patient care and physical activity to treat/ prevent medical conditions prompted him to get involved with ACSM’s Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) initiative. It also helped him facilitate a partnership between ACSM, EIM and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners to advance the integration of physical activity assessment, counseling and referral into routine clinical practice.
