ACSM & The National Plan for Physical Activity

The National Plan for Physical Activity poses this question: What would it be like if everyone in the United States came together to make physical activity a part of life?

Expected for release later this year, the National Plan is a comprehensive plan for promoting physical activity that will provide the framework to support a broad national effort to increase physical activity. ACSM has led the call for The Plan, beginning with a historic roundtable in 2006 in Washington, D.C.

The Plan’s goals center on priorities and commitment on national, state and community levels; advocacy and action that makes and translates a compelling case; and sustainability and social movement that creates a platform reliant on stakeholders working together.

The Plan and its implementation will be the focus of a conference July 1 – 2, 2009, in Washington, D.C., which will seek input from policymakers, scientists, healthcare providers and leaders in public health, education, transportation, media, business and industry and non-profit organizations. ACSM members are invited and encouraged to attend. Visit the National Physical Activity Plan Web site to register and get involved!

Read the Executive Summary from an ACSM-convened 2006 roundtable, "Charting and Changing the Policy Landscape." ACSM member participants, leadership from more than 35 national organizations, and guests discussed what course a new era in American health policy should take.  The National Plan was key among those outcomes.
