SESSION 1

Applying the principles of Exercise Science

This is the first of six sessions of the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist webinar series.  In this session you will learn basic principles of exercise science including physiology and anatomy of systems involved with exercise as well as expected responses of each system during exercise.

Learning Objectives (90 minutes total)

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Understand anatomy and basic physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems.
  2. Understand basic principles of biomechanics and kinesiology and how skeletal muscle and bone interactions allowing movement to occur.

Register: HFS Webinar Session 1: 03/25/2010

SESSION 2

Understanding energy metabolism, energy production and metabolic calculations

This is the second of six sessions of the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist webinar series.   In this session you will learn energy metabolism principles and processes, oxygen uptake and consumption principles, and other physiological considerations, which will enhance your understanding of exercise endurance and muscle function.  You will also learn basic biochemistry principles and metabolic systems which will enhance your understanding of human performance.  You will review metabolic equations related to exercise prescription and go through examples.

Learning Objectives (90 minutes total)

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Understand energy and substrate metabolism and how each is involved with aerobic and musculoskeletal exercise.
  2. Understand oxygen circulation, uptake, and consumption by skeletal muscle.
  3. Understand the relationship between the physiology of exercise and metabolic calculations as outlined in ACSM’s Guideline’s for Exercise Testing and Prescription.
  4. Have a working understanding of metabolic equations and calculations.

Register: HFS Webinar Session 2: 04/01/2010

SESSION 3

Designing an exercise program

This is the third of six sessions of the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist webinar series.   In this session you will learn fitness programming for low-risk clients, including aerobic, resistance, flexibility and functional exercise programming.  Additionally, you will learn health history, risk appraisal and informed consent to better ensure appropriate program design.

Learning Objectives (90 minutes total)

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Identify primary reasons for taking a health history and the content therein.
  2. Safely and effectively design and prescribe aerobic, resistance and flexibility programs based on current ACSM guidelines.
  3. Identify contraindications to exercise programming.

Register:  HFS Webinar Session 3: 02/03/10

SESSION 4

Understanding pathophysiology, screening and risk factors for Special Populations

This is the fourth of six sessions of the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist webinar series.   In this session you will learn basic pathophysiology and risk factors for select chronic diseases.  Following this session you will be able to identify each disease process and risk factors associated with them, along with each disease impact on exercise performance and tolerance.

Learning Objectives (90 minutes total)

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors associated with chronic diseases, including thresholds of measurement and ACSM risk stratification.
  2. Identify major and emergent signs and symptoms associated with cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic disease(s).
  3. Understand basic disease processes to the level required to perform ACSM risk stratification and medical history screening.
  4. Understand special considerations for populations requiring additional screening and/or supervision during an exercise program.

Register: HFS Webinar Session 4: 02/10/10

SESSION 5

Designing exercise programs for Special Populations

This is the fifth of six sessions of the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist webinar series.   In this session you will learn current guidelines for exercise training with special populations along with special considerations for designing aerobic, resistance, flexibility and functional exercise prescription.

Learning Objectives (90 minutes total)

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Safely and effectively prescribe an exercise program for individuals identified with chronic and stable diseases who are medically cleared to participate.
  2. Identify conditions in which exercise may be contraindicated and require physician referral.

Register: HFS Webinar Session 5: 02/17/10

SESSION 6

Understanding nutrition, obesity and weight management

This is the sixth of six sessions of the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist webinar series.   In this session you will learn issues related to epidemiological obesity reduction, individual weight management, body composition identification and assessment and nutrition principles.  You will also learn macro and micro nutrients, major eating plans and current food-guide pyramid principles.

Learning Objectives (90 minutes total)

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Understand and explain the significance of American and international obesity epidemiology.
  2. Understand issues related to weight management and strategies for success.
  3. Understand body composition assessment methods and techniques.
  4. Understand basic nutritional guidelines and review of food sources and portions.
