RECAP

The 15th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress drew more than one hundred participants representing 22 countries. The Congress was opened by Mr. Mustafa Larfaoui, President of FINA. Dr. Patrick Schamasch, IOC Medical and Scientific Director, provided the Bleasdale Lecture. Exciting and timely presentations followed with wonderful interaction between those in the audience and the many speaker panels. Luncheon panels on specialty topics were offered each day which allowed informal exchange. Dale Neuberger, President and CEO of the Indiana Sports Corporation thanked those involved and officially closed the Congress. FINA Sports Medicine Committee Chair, Dr. Margo Mountjoy chaired the event with Dr. Jim Miller chairing the Program Planning Committee.

NEEDS STATEMENT
The 15th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress is designed to contribute to the educational development of scientists and medical practitioners who care for aquatic sports athletes and require a detailed understanding of the fields of acute care of athletic injuries, sports nutrition, exercise physiology, doping control, sport psychology and injury prevention. The 15th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress will provide timely data and information to enhance a professional's current level of knowledge and awareness in each of these fields.

BACKGROUND
In the last several years, the FINA World Sports Medicine Congress has taken place either preceding or following the FINA World Swimming Championships (short course). The Congress draws high scientific level presentations in the field of aquatics medicine. In addition, medical advice and practical applications have been beneficial to clinical participants, as well as coaches. The two-day event will highlight current research in aquatics medicine. Sessions will be offered in a variety of formats including special lectures, panel discussions, and poster sessions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Participants can expect to leave the 15th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress with the ability to:

• Explain the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1994 and its impact on the supplements industry, the consumer and the competitive aquatic athlete.
  
  
• Identify issues commonly faced by aquatic delegations during international travel and competition.
  
  
• Identify recent doping control efforts involving the IOC, FINA, USADA and WADA and the control of doping in aquatic sports worldwide.
  
  
• Identify the clinical and non-clinical needs of masters athletes.
  
  
• Identify the spectrum of clinical disorders associated with Disordered Eating and explain their etiologies and consequences.
  
  
• Discuss the relationships between shoulder pain and various physical characteristics and how these relationships can be optimized during training and performance.

ACCREDITATION
The 15th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of American College of Sports Medicine and Indiana Sports Corporation. ACSM is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians and takes responsibility for the content, quality and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

ABSTRACTS
Abstracts were accepted for consideration through August 26, 2004. Those who submitted abstracts will be notified regarding specific placement via e-mail. Accepted abstracts will be published in the Proceedings Booklet available at the meeting. Research will be presented at the Congress in one of two formats including free communication slide sessions and poster sessions in the categories listed below.
