ACSM Team Physiciansm Course, Part I
The next course is scheduled for February 1-5, 2006 in Orlando, Florida. A One-Day Pre-conference on "Tennis Medicine and Science" will be held at this time. A Tennis Medicine and Science preconference is available on February 1, from 12:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. A separate registration fee applies to this preconference event which will focus on "optimizing performance while reducing the risk of injury and treating injuries if they do occur." More information is in the Preview Program.

ACSM Team Physiciansm Course, Part I Topics:

  • Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Issues in Sports
  • Overuse Injuries—Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention

  • Subspecialty Issues in Sports Medicine

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify and provide diagnosis and disposition (manage or consult) for cervical spine, cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematological, gynecologic, dental, ophthalmologic, ENT and musculoskeletal (shoulder and elbow) problems in the athlete.
  2. Explain the basic science of the cardiovascular, pulmonary and musculoskeletal systems as it is applicable to the athlete.
  3. Identify specific situations and problems encountered in specific sports.
  4. Identify the role of therapeutic drugs, performance-enhancing drugs/procedures, and drugs of abuse in sports.

Accreditation
The American College of Sports Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American College of Sports Medicine takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

  • AMA/PRA -- The American College of Sports Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 26.5 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
  • AAFP -- Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.
  • NATA - CEUs -- The National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA) has approved the course for 26.5 CEU credits.

About ACSM Team Physiciansm Courses
ACSM created the courses to meet the needs of clinical practitioners who care for and manage athletic teams as part of their total practice. With the completion of the two parts of the TPC courses, a clinician will have been presented the information needed to perform the duties of a team physician, including:

  • Organization of medical care for athletes
  • Delivery of medical care for athletes
    • Pre participation evaluation
    • Treatment of illnesses and injuries with return to activity recommendations
    • Identification and proper management of nutritional, psychological and drug programs
  • Assisting in the development of conditioning and training programs
  • Providing coverage for games and other athletic events including mass participation events
  • Developing injury prevention strategies

The courses do not need to be taken in sequential order.
