ACSM Affiliate Societies

Overview-
In 2007, the ACSM Board of Trustees took an historic step when it approved the creation of an Affiliate Society program.  As is the case with many professional associations, the affiliate model is a key strategy to serve professionals within a multi-disciplinary organization.   ACSM’s creation of Affiliate Society model allows for large specialty areas of professional interests to be aligned directly with ACSM while being authorized to operate within broadly defined parameters and to have operational and programmatic independence within those parameters.  While ACSM’s Interest Groups continue to act as more informal communities of professionals with common interests, the Affiliate Society model serves those few professional interest areas where there is a sizeable critical mass of members (and prospective members) who desire a more formal and active role in advancing the specialty area aligned with ACSM.

ACSM’s Affiliate Societies are approved by the ACSM Board of Trustees and operate under a set of approved governance documents with some administrative support from ACSM.   Volunteer leaders are responsible for the programmatic initiatives of each Affiliate Society.
ACSM currently has two approved Affiliate Societies:  1)  Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA); and 2) International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP).

Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA)–  Launched May 2008
The primary purpose of CEPA is to advance the scientific and practical application of clinical exercise physiology for the betterment of the health, fitness, and quality of life for patients at high risk or living with a chronic disease. The focus of CEPA is to advance the profession of clinical exercise physiology through advocacy, education, and career development.
