ACTIVE AGING PARTNERSHIP (AAP)
After a successful
October 2000 launch in conjunction with the ACSM Specialty Conference,
the Active Aging Partnership (AAP) held its mid-winter meeting at ACSM
National headquarters in Indianapolis on February 1-2, 2001, inviting
its official partners to convene to develop a national agenda.
Nationally recognized organizations that comprise the partnership
include Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the National Institute of
Aging (NIA), the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the American
Geriatric Society (AGS).
Chaired by Wojtek Jan
Chodzko-Zajko, Ph.D., FACSM, the AAP has at the forefront of its vision
to develop a multi-year campaign promoting the importance of physical
activity and behavior modification within the population 50+ years of
age. In addition, the mission of the AAP is to purposefully advocate the
need for physical activity in older adults and to promote the benefits
of physical activity for enhanced quality of life.
The group will initially
focus on short-term common goals in the areas of research, education,
and practice that can be realized through collaborative
inter-organizational efforts this year. Long-term plans include biannual
teleconferences and on-site meetings in conjunction with national aging
meetings. Read more about the Active Aging Partnership's
activities.
