Current Grant Opportunities

The 2008 Grant Deadline has passed.  Below is the list of the grants that were offered.  Please check back in Fall 2008 for updated information.

ACSM Research Grants

Paffenbarger-Blair Fund for Epidemiological Research on Physical Activity
Dr. Ralph S. Paffenbarger, Jr., a co-recipient of the first Olympic Prize in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, made an extraordinarily generous gift to the American College of Sports Medicine by donating his share of the award to the College's capital campaign with the monies added to the College's epidemiology endowment. The interest on this contribution makes this grant possible. The intent of this award is to encourage researchers early in their career to become involved with physical activity epidemiology. Applicants are expected to apply within two (2) years of receiving a postgraduate degree or completion of clinical training. The award will be in the amount of $10,000 for a one year period.

Research Endowment
The research endowment has been made possible by charitable funds and individual donations derived from the annual campaign, specifically targeted for research. The intent of the research endowment is to use a portion of the interest derived from these funds to support basic and applied research in exercise science. The primary goal is to fund mechanistic, hypothesis driven, basic and applied research.

A $10,000 grant is available and is applicable to all relevant fields of exercise science. Funding is primarily targeted for new or junior investigators, within 7 years of attaining a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D.). It is the intent of this grant to provide seed money support after which further funding would be sought from other sources. Only one application per person is allowed.

Clinical Sports Medicine Endowment
ACSM is pleased to announce that the Clinical Sports Medicine Endowment will fund an annual award of $5,000 for research that is directly related to clinical sports medicine.  This clinical research award is open to MDs, DOs, PTs, ATCs, and other medical professionals (ACSM members only) involved in the conduct of patient-based clinical research.

The purpose of the award is to stimulate:
1.  clinical research in sports medicine and

2.  research in clinical sports medicine.

Clinical research in sports medicine must be derived from active care of athletes, such as prevention strategies, treatment protocols, or treatment outcomes.  Research in clinical sports medicine must be directly related to issues of active care of athletes, such as pathogenesis, pathophysiology, biomechanics, or environmental issues.  The proposals must demonstrate the study’s direct relationship to one of these purposes.  The active patient care must be provided to physically active recreational, competitive or elite athletes.  It is anticipated that the completed research will be presented at a highlighted session at the ACSM Annual Meeting.

Graduate Student Research Grants

Doctoral Student Research Grants
ACSM Foundation Research Grants for doctoral students up to $5,000 for a one-year period. The awards are to be used for experimental subjects, supplies, and small equipment needs. Doctoral students enrolled in full-time programs are eligible to apply.

Carl V. Gisolfi Memorial Fund
Carl V. Gisolfi, Ph.D., FACSM, was one of the most influential leaders of ACSM in its 50+ year history. With Gatorade, ACSM created the Gisolfi Memorial Fund to honor his many contributions to ACSM and the exercise science field. This grant is designated to encourage research in thermoregulation, exercise, and hydration.  One award will be dispersed to ACSM doctoral students in the amount of $5,000 each for a one-year period. **Funding availability is subject to change.

NASA Space Physiology Research Grants
Through the generosity of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), $10,000 is available for research grants in the area of exercise, weightlessness, and musculoskeletal physiology. Doctoral students enrolled in full-time programs are eligible to apply. Grants can range up to $5,000 and are available for a one-year period. Only U.S. residents are eligible to apply. Funds available after October 1, 2008.

Plus One Active Research Grant on Wellness Using Internet Technology
Image
With the support of Plus One Health Management, this grant is designated for human research in the area of Physical Activity and Human Performance. Emphasis will be on new and innovative approaches to Wellness Solutions and Education using Internet Technology. The award will be for $5,000 for a one-year period.

Power Plate Research Grant on Whole Body Vibration
This $5,000 grant is designated for human research in the area of Physical Activity and Human Performance.  Emphasis will be placed on funding for new and innovative approaches to research using a whole body vibration instrument in the study design, methods, and implementation.

Raymond and Rosalee Weiss Research Endowment
Wishing to advance research into the health benefits - physical, mental and emotional - of physical activity and sports, the Weiss Research Endowment has been established for ACSM students studying in this field. One project will be funded for applied rather than for basic research, with the intent of applying the results to programs involving physical activity and sports. The psychological and emotional benefits of physical activity are of particular importance to the benefactors of this endowment, Drs. Raymond and Rosalee Weiss, and proposals addressing those issues will be given priority. One reward of $1,500 is available.
