Past ACSM Specialty Conferences

ACSM has organized six specialty conferences with various organizations since 1995.  See the information below for details on each conference.

On September 27-30, 2006, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) hosted the "Integrative Physiology of Exercise: Discovery and Application of Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, and Metabolic Science" meeting at the Indiana Convention Center and Westin Hotel in Indianapolis. Because of the rapid increase in scientific knowledge related to exercise physiology, ACSM sought to emphasize recent advancements in our understanding of exercise metabolism and in the regulation of both cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology in a basic science specialty conference. The wide range of symposia topics presented at this meeting featured both senior and emerging scientists and provided an exciting environment for lively scientific exchanges among attendees.

The conference featured 18 symposia involving 70 speakers on aspects of metabolic, cardiovascular, and pulmonary physiology. Core events featured 180 poster communications, and total attendance was 440 over the course of three days. Each day's events culminated with an invited lecture by an eminent worker in each of the three areas represented: Jerome Dempsey, Ph.D., FACSM, University of Wisconsin, "Respiratory Influences on O2 Transport, Muscle Blood Flow, Fatigue, and Exercise Performance"; David E. Kelley, M.D., University of Pittsburgh, "Effects of Exercise to Improve Insulin Resistance and Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Dysfunction"; and Peter Wagner, Ph.D., University of California San Diego, "Skeletal Muscle Angiogenesis Responses to Exercise: The Role of VEGF." The American Physiological Society (APS) and Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) were supporting organizations.

Abstracts of free communications are published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®  online (www.acsm-msse.org, November 2006). Symposium proceedings will be published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®  as they become available.

In October of 2005, the Walking for Health Specialty Conference was held at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine. This Conference focused on measurement issues and challenges with walking.  Over 100 abstracts were presented and there were over 280 attendees, including participants from 17 countries.  The Conference was chaired by Weimo Zhu, PhD, FACSM.  Please check back for a Summary Statement and abstracts, as they will be published in the near future.

In October 16-18, 2003 - the Measurement Issues and Challenges in Aging Research The 10th Measurement and Evaluation Symposium, the University  of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Established in 1949, the Measurement and Evaluation (M&E) Council is one of 12 councils/societies in the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness (AAALF), which is one of six associations in AAHPERD.  The M&E Council holds its symposium every three or four years, with a focus on measurement and evaluation, statistical, and research design issues in the field of Kinesiology.  Targeting measurement specialists, researchers who are interested in measurements and statistics and more recently broadened to include researchers in the following six sub-disciplines: motor learning, sport/exercise psychology, biomechanics, movement studies in disability, and exercise physiology. These experts are brought together to address measurement issues and challenges in these disciplines.

October 20-22, 2000 - Physical Activity Programming for the Older Adult
There were 175 participants in attendance at the conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.  The conference was chaired by Wojtek Chodzko Zajko, Ph.D. and Loretta DiPietro, Ph.D. Steven N. Blair, P.E.D., past-president of ACSM, gave the keynote address, followed by fourteen illustrious presentations given by esteemed faculty and consultants. A Welcome Reception and two poster sessions complemented the event.  This conference began the start of the Active Aging Partnership

October 19-21, 1997 - the Physical Activity Interventions Conference was held in Dallas, Texas. This Specialty Conference was jointly sponsored by ACSM and the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research and was offered in collaboration with the NCPPA.  The first in the Cooper Conference Series, the papers from this meeting were published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine 1998;15(4).

September 28-30, 1995 - Oxidative Metabolism and Blood Flow in Skeletal Muscle: Physiological, Biohpysical, Biochemichal, and Molecular Aspects This conference was also held in Indianapolis, Indiana and was chaired by Peter Wagner, M.D., Paul Johnson, Ph.D., and David Wilson, Ph.D..  The meeting was an interactive forum of focused presentations on the current understanding of the field, followed by in depth debate and discussion by the audience and faculty. This inaugural event funded by AMGEN proved to be a scientifically rewarding experience for the over 100 in attendance at this interdisciplinary conference.

Topic suggestions from ACSM members or from organizations that might fund ACSM Roundtables or Specialty Conferences should be submitted to the Research Administration Office, in the form of a letter of intent, at least eighteen months in advance of the proposed timeline to enhance the opportunities for outside funding. E-mail any questions to jsenior@acsm.org.
