After attending my first ACSM Annual Meeting in the 1980’s, I quickly recognized I wanted to become an active member in this vibrant organization. I put my volunteer efforts into the Nutrition Interest Group and was chair or co-chair from 2001 to 2011. My focus was to enhance nutrition programming at Annual Meeting as well as to improve networking among the nutrition professionals.
Throughout the years, I have enjoyed serving on the Public Information Committee, and have continually helped disseminate information to the general public about current topics. I have been a speaker for ACSM’s Desk-Side Learning Events, ACSM’s Team Physicians’ Course and ACSM’s Health and Fitness Summit. I contribute regularly to ACSM’s Fit Society Newsletter, and assist the ACSM Public Relations Department with addressing nutrition questions posed by the media.
I currently have interest in dedicating more time to ACSM on a higher level and I would enjoy the opportunity to be a working member of the ACSM Board of Trustees. 2. What is ACSM’s greatest strength and how would you make that aspect of the organization even stronger?
ACSM’s greatest strength is the intelligence of its membership, as highlighted by the cutting edge research and public health initiatives developed by the members. I see ACSM as an important organization for disseminating the latest sports medicine information to health professionals and the general public alike. As a member of the Board of Trustees, I would work to support ACSM’s public outreach, website, and social media presence, with the goal of enhancing the health of the nation as well as the health of individual athletes. I would be honored to be able to support and enhance ACSM’s programs and outreach; doing so is particularly important at this time when we are in the midst of a national obesity crisis.
