Endowments and Funds

• Barbara Drinkwater Research Fund

  Barbara Drinkwater, Ph.D., FACSM, served as ACSM's first female President in 1988-89.  ACSM has established a fund in her name to make possible an important opportunity for ACSM to stimulate scientific discovery and clinical progress in the vital area of women’s health.  The fund has a strategic framework to organize and propel forward its efforts in improving the health, performance and well-being of women and girls in physical activity and sports.

• Carl V. Gisolfi Memorial Fund

  Carl V. Gisolfi, Ph.D., FACSM, was one of the most influential leaders of ACSM in its 50+ history.  With Gatorade, ACSM created the Gisolfi Memorial Fund to honor his many contributions to ACSM and the exercise science field.  This fund is designated to encourage research in thermoregulation, exercise, and hydration.

• Clinical Sports Medicine Fund

  Additional funds are needed to increase the endowment balance for research in clinical sports medicine, so that a dedicated research grant can be awarded each year to a sports medicine clinician.

• Doctoral Student Research Grants

  ACSM Foundation Research Grants for doctoral students up to $5,000 for a one-year period. The awards are to be used for experimental subjects, supplies, and small equipment needs. Doctoral students enrolled in full-time programs are eligible to apply.

• Education Endowment

  The Foundation recognizes that education is a key element to fulfilling the mission of ACSM.  The goal of the endowment is to fund a member's educational outreach project in exercise science or sports medicine.

• Gail Butterfield Nutrition Travel Award

  Established in memory of Gail E. Butterfield, the fund will be used to provide annual assistance to help fund travel expenses accrued by two (2) PhD students (one from the U.S. and one international student) to present their scholarly work at the ACSM Annual Meeting. 2011 Gail Butterfield Nutrition Travel Award Application (Note: You must have Adobe Reader 9 to complete the application. http://www.adobe.com)

• The Lisa Krivickas Travel Award

  The Lisa Krivickas Travel Award will be given annually to a female clinician scientist in order to fund travel to the ACSM Annual Meeting.  Dr. Krivickas’ research and clinical expertise in Sports Medicine was highly regarded, and she was elected to the Board of Trustees of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Krivickas’ ground-breaking research on muscle fibers related to her interests in how muscles change with physical activity and in neuromuscular diseases. She contributed her great expertise to patients with neuromuscular disease by developing rehabilitation strategies and treatments to improve quality of life and survival. In addition to her research, clinical trials, and clinical care for ALS patients, she courageously volunteered to serve as the first person with ALS treated with a novel, potentially very risky treatment. Her courage and perseverance advanced this line of ALS research treatment by many years. In doing so, she continued serving her patients even when she could no longer care for them clinically.

• Michael L. Pollock Memorial Fund

  Established in memory of Michael L. Pollock, Ph.D., FACSM, this fund will be used to assist students wanting to attend the ACSM Annual Meeting. 2011 Michael L. Pollock Student Scholarship Application (Note: You must have Adobe Reader 9 to complete the application. http://www.adobe.com )

• Ralph S. Paffenbarger-Blair Fund for Epidemiological Research on Physical Activity

  In 1996, Ralph S. Paffenbarger, M.D., DrPh, Dsc, FACSM was co-recipient of the first Olympic Prize for Sports Sciences.   Dr. Paffenbarger gifted this medal to Steven Blair, P.E.D., FACSM, who, in turn, donated the medal to ACSM.  ACSM created this fund in recognition of Dr. Paffenbarger's many contributions to the College and epidemiology research in the physical activity area.  This fund awards an annual grant to enhance ongoing research in the field of epidemiology.

• Raymond and Rosalee Weiss Endowment Fund

  Created by Raymond Weiss, Ph.D., FACSM, and Rosalee Weiss, Ph.D., this endowment fund was established to provide on-going financial support to sponsor research on the subject of the physical, mental and emotional benefits of physical activity.  The Weisses established the endowment fund with current gifts so that they may witness grantmaking for sponsored research. Ultimately, they have planned additional gifts to the Weiss Endowment Fund by a will bequest included in their estate plan.

• Research Endowment

  Basic and applied scientists have always been contributors to the success of ACSM.  To honor this commitment to excellence, the Foundation maintains an endowment dedicated to the advancement of basic and applied research.  The fund annually awards $10,000 to an outstanding research project submitted to the ACSM Foundation Research Grants Program.

• Steven M. Horvath Travel Award

• Kay & Craig Broeder Preventative Health Female Cancer Fund

  The Broeder Preventative Health Female Cancer Fund established in 2009 will provide research funding for master and/or doctoral students or junior faculty interested in doing exercise and nutrition-based clinical preventative research.
