How Athletes Can Stay Positive After an Injury

Injury can often derail even the most motivated workout warriors.

“An athlete identifies very strongly as an athlete, oftentimes predominantly so,” says Greg Chertok, a N.Y.-based sports and exercise psychology consultant at Telos Sport Psychology Coaching. “Imagine how emotionally straining it may be for an athlete, whose athletic identity is paramount, who suffers an injury and is stripped of his ability to continue engaging in the very activity that makes up who he is.”

Exercise and sport often provide people with a sense of accomplishment, a stress outlet, and an opportunity to engage in competition either in solitude or cooperatively in a group setting. Dr. Chertok says it’s important to find an alternative form of activity to continue reaping the effects of physical activity.
