For Workout Gains, Embrace Variety

To get stronger, bigger and faster, you have to change up your routine, says Jeffrey A. Potteiger, an American College of Sports Medicine fellow based in Grand Rapids, Mich. “The body won’t continue to see gains in cardiovascular fitness or muscular strength if you keep doing the same thing over and over,” Dr. Potteiger says.

“You need to introduce the body to new and different stimuli,” he says. This training philosophy, called periodization, refers to changes made in volume or intensity in training, to maximize fitness and strength gains.
