Indianapolis, IN— It is with great sadness that the sporting world and the American College of Sports Medicine mourn the death the Iranian Para cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad following an accident in yesterday’s road race at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.  According to the International Paralympic Committee, “Golbarnezhad, 48, was involved in a crash at around 10:40am on the first section of the Grumari loop, a mountainous stretch of the course.  The athlete received treatment at the scene and was in the process of being taken to the athlete hospital when he suffered a cardiac arrest.  The ambulance then diverted to the nearby Unimed Rio Hospital in Barra where he passed away soon after arrival.”

Dr. Walt Thompson, President-Elect of ACSM who is in Rio coordinating international research projects for the IPC said that “the death of any athlete makes us sad and because this is the first para-athlete to suffer a life-ending accident during the Paralympic Games is tragic.  We all mourn the death of Bahman and his teammates from Iran”.  Sir Philip Craven, President of the IPC said in a press release “the Paralympic Family is united in grief at this horrendous tragedy which casts a shadow over what have been great Paralympic Games here in Rio.”

The IPC will lower the Iranian flag and the Paralympic flag in the Paralympic Village to half-mast and there will be a moment of silence for Bahman and his family.  For more information click on www.paralympic.org.
