A Physician and Triathlete’s Prescription for Health and Fitness

Dr. Andy Baldwin to Address ACSM Summit

LAS VEGAS –Andy Baldwin, M.D., a family physician, triathlete, and former contestant on ABC’s The Bachelor, will present his unique perspective on health and fitness in his keynote address at the American College of Sports Medicine’s 17th annual Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition.

Dr. Baldwin is a nationally recognized speaker on health and wellness and on motivating youth. One of Baldwin’s initiatives is Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future, a national program targeting the childhood obesity epidemic. He also created the annual Dr. Andy Baldwin Youth Fitness day in Honolulu.

“My experience as a physician, naval officer and high-endurance athlete gives me a unique insight regarding the obesity epidemic in the U.S. and what we can do to reverse the trends,” said Baldwin. “An emphasis on preventive care is key, versus taking a pill or seeking an easy fix for obesity and other chronic diseases.”

Dr. Baldwin is senior medical officer on the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island.  Previously, he served as a spokesperson for Navy medicine at the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C. where he also assisted the office of the U.S. Surgeon General with the Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future project. Baldwin is an advocate for the First Lady’s Let's Move! Campaign and serves as ambassador for ING’s Run for Something Better program targeting childhood obesity.

Dr. Baldwin completed his first triathlon in 2001 with Team-in-Training, combining sport and charity for the first time, and finished atop the podium. In 2002 he completed his first of Ironman Triathlon World Championships. Baldwin was named five times to the All-Navy Triathlon Team, is a three-time U.S.A. Triathlon All-American, and has competed internationally in numerous Ironman events.
