Indianapolis— The American College of Sports Medicine has awarded $500 scholarship awards to two university students as part of its outgoing editor-in-chief (EIC) recognition scholarship program. The scholarships are awarded in honor of outgoing Editor-in-Chief Steven J. Keteyian, PhD, FACSM, of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal® (FIT). The purpose of this scholarship program is to recognize and continue the great legacy of EICs for ACSM’s official journals.

Editor-in-Chief Keteyian’s term with FIT came to a close at the end of 2015 and he awarded two $500 scholarships, one to Gavin Connolly at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich., and the other to Mario Rusnak at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. The scholarships were earmarked to cover costs associated with attending ACSM’s Midwest Regional Chapter Annual Meeting in November.

"It is a great privilege and honor to receive this scholarship and to be recognized by the American College of Sports Medicine and the faculty at Central Michigan University for the work that I am putting in towards obtaining my master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, in relation to the research I am involved in while also working with Central Michigan University women's soccer team," said Connolly.

"I am very excited and thankful to have received this scholarship to attend such a prestigious event. I really expanded my knowledge at the conference by listening to fellow professionals in the Exercise Science field, such as my current graduate school professor Dr. Charles Marks,” said Rusnak. “I am humbled and overwhelmed by the generosity of ACSM and Oakland University faculty for choosing me for this wonderful opportunity. Thank you!"

The EIC recognition scholarship program began in 2013 with outgoing EIC Andrew J. Young, PhD, FACSM (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®) and the late Priscilla M. Clarkson, PhD, FACSM (Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews). Scholarships will be awarded for each outgoing EIC of an official ACSM journal.
