ACSM Publications Criteria for Books or Multimedia Proposals

ACSM welcomes questions and publishing proposals from individuals and commercial publishers. The College publishes content for educational, professional, certification and consumer audiences.

Projects should relate to the ACSM mission statement: "The American College of Sports Medicine promotes and integrates scientific research, education, and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health, and quality of life."

Projects generally are divided into two categories:

  • Official ACSM books, such as ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, ACSM’s Introduction to Exercise Science, and ACSM’s Complete Guide to Fitness & Health. ACSM owns the copyright on these projects.
  • “Published in Cooperation With” projects in which ACSM reviews and endorses the content. Examples include The Exercise Professional’s Guide to Optimizing Health and Preventing Sudden Death in Sport and Physical Activity. ACSM does not typically own the copyright on these projects.

ACSM publishes primarily with commercial partners. The ACSM Publications Committee reviews and approves all proposals.
