Register for a Behind-the-Science Look at ACSM's Newest Pronouncements

Oct 01, 2019

PAG webinarIn May, ACSM published a collection of 14 new pronouncements that present the science behind the updated Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Each pronouncement addresses a specific topic, presenting the science and identifying key knowledge gaps for future research to address. On October 17, two members of the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee will share a behind-the-science look at the pronouncements. In the 60-minute webinar, ACSM member Katrina Piercy, Ph.D., R.D., ACSM-CEP, and ACSM Fellow Ken Powell, M.D., M.P.H., will discuss the background and process behind developing the pronouncements and the relevance for your current and future work.

Among the information Dr. Piercy and Dr. Powell will outline:

  • how the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee was formed and its role;
  • developing the manuscripts published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®;
  • what the scientific pronouncements mean for ACSM members; and
  • how ACSM members can use the pronouncements.
Dr. Piercy is a physical activity and nutrition advisor in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She served as the federal lead for the Physical Activities Guidelines for Americans, second edition, and oversaw the work of the 17-member advisory committee. As the lead policy writer, Dr. Piercy also guided the writing team to translate the committee’s work into the guidelines.

Dr. Powell served as an epidemiologist with the CDC for 25 years. The relationship between physical activity and health has been an important theme during his career. He was a member of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee and co-chair of the 2018 Advisory Committee.
