FAQ - Awards & Grants

• Is it possible to apply to more than one grant?

  Applicants should apply to only one grant initiative. The Research Review Committee will determine which grant award the application should fall under.

• When do you announce the grant winners?

  All applicants will be notified of the status of their proposals by either telephone or email during the first week of April.

• Is it possible to ask for funds to collect and gather data abroad?

  The grant application instructions do not indicate that this would be prohibited. However, applicants should include round-trip coach fare to and from the abroad destination. It will be the responsibility of the applicant to justify that overseas data collection is pertinent to the completion of the research study.

• Is the Paffenbarger-Blair grant for a completed master's degree or a completed doctoral degree?

  The Paffenbarger-Blair Fund for Epidemiological Research of Physical Activity grant is for those who have received their doctoral degree. Applicants must apply within two years of receiving their degree or completion of clinical training.

• Can I apply to a grant, even though the IRB is currently reviewing my project?

  ACSM uses a "Just in time" review process. You do not need to have the IRB review completed before submitting your grant application.

• What is the assurance number in the application form?

  The assurance number is the number your university assigns to the IRB approval.

• Can I include indirects in my budget?

  No, the ACSM Foundation does not pay indirect costs.

• Is the deadline the postmark or receipt date?

  All proposals must be received by close of business (5:00 p.m. ET) on the stated deadline.

• What is the front page of the application?

  The front page is the first page of the application.

• What is an abstract?

  An abstract is a brief summary of a research article that is used to help the reader understand the purpose, methods, results, discussion and conclusion of the research article.

• If I want to resubmit a grant proposal similar to one I have submitted in the past, do I need to fill out a new application, or can I use the previous application?

  Yes, you will always need to submit a new grant application. If there are any differences between the two studies, you will need to fill out the 'Point-by-Point' Summary of Revisions: Required for Resubmission of a Previously Reviewed Proposal section found on page two of the grant application.

• Are graphs and images allowed in the application this year?

  Yes, but you will need to add hard copies of them to the application submission.

• Where is the abstract section of the grant application?

  The abstract section of the application is called "Brief Rationale and Specific Aims."
