Research Grants

ACSM's Foundation Research Grant Program started in 1989 with one research initiative in basic and applied science, and it awarded $50,000 among five doctoral research students. In 2012, the program grew to have eleven research initiatives and award approximately $169,000 among 25 research students. Grants in this program and other programs are outlined below.

Carl V. Gisolfi Memorial Fund

Carl V. Gisolfi, Ph.D., FACSM, was one of the most influential leaders of ACSM in its 50+ year history. With Gatorade, ACSM created the Gisolfi Memorial Fund to honor his many contributions to ACSM and the exercise science field. This grant is designated to encourage research in thermoregulation, exercise, and hydration.  One award will be dispersed to ACSM doctoral students in the amount of $5,000 each for a one-year period.

The 2013 ACSM Foundation Research Grant Program application is below. There are two parts to the application. Both Part A and Part B must be submitted as one complete PDF application. Applicants for student research grants must have graduate student status during the term of the grant to be considered for funding. Applicants must be current members of ACSM at the time of submitting an application to be funded. Grants are open to all ACSM members, including international members. However, the NASA initiative is open to U.S. residents only.

The deadline for the 2013 grant application was 5:00 PM ET on January 18, 2013.
