Research Grants

ACSM's Foundation Research Grant Program started in 1989 with one research initiative in basic and applied science, and it awarded $50,000 among five doctoral research students. In 2012, the program grew to have eleven research initiatives and award approximately $169,000 among 25 research students. Grants in this program and other programs are outlined below.

Visiting Scholar Award

The Visiting Scholar Award is given to an investigator who seeks further experience as an independent researcher. The award provides financial support for an investigator to visit a clinic or laboratory to learn new and current techniques in exercise science and sports medicine. Download the 2013 application.

Award requirements include:

  1. Applicants must have been an ACSM member in good standing for at least two consecutive years (including student membership).
  2. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent).
  3. Applicants must submit an application to education@acsm.org on or before the deadline. Applications should include application form, biographical sketch, statement of how the proposed visit will enhance research competence, description of and rationale for laboratory selected, itemized budget and approval letters from present and host facilities.

Winners will receive:

  1. A maximum of $5,000 to include travel, financial support and laboratory supplies for up to six months.

Winners must submit a written report of activities to education@acsm.org within three months of visit completion.
