Student Awards

ACSM invests in the future of sports medicine and exercise science by giving to our student members. Student members are eligible for grants and awards to offset the rising costs of tuition and travel. Upcoming student award opportunities are listed below. 

Basic Science World Congress Student Award

The American College of Sports Medicine Foundation will support up to four $500 travel awards in conjunction with the World Congress on the Basic Science of Muscle Hypertrophy and Atrophy (Basic Science World Congress theme for the 2018 Annual Meeting). If you performed the work in the abstract when you were a student (B.S., M.S., Ph.D., M.D.), you are eligible to apply for a $500 foundation award to help defray the costs of travel for this 2018 meeting. 

Award Details:


Eligibility – Current or pending student member of ACSM at the time of application for this foundation award. A student is considered eligible for the award if they are someone who has not received his/her doctoral degree when the abstract was submitted to ACSM for the annual meeting.

Application Process:
1.     Electronic applications of the student’s accepted (and expanded) abstract must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) on March 2, 2018 to Danielle Davis (

Application Submission Material:
1.    An expanded abstract of original research submitted and accepted to the ACSM Annual Meeting under the World Congress on the Basic Science of Muscle Hypertrophy and Atrophy category. You will be notified by the first week of February if your abstract was submitted.

The applicant must be the first author and the work should be the author’s own.  The format for the abstract must be expanded from the original ACSM abstract to 2 pages with title, authors and institutions clearly listed, all text in 12 pt. font with 1” margins.  Subheadings of Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions should be included.  Please submit the expanded abstract as PDF document.

2.    Proof of student membership

For all submissions, please put “Basic Science of Muscle Hypertrophy and Atrophy World Congress Award:" in the subject header of application e-mails. Recipients will be notified by early May of the award status.

For those that are awarded a $500 grant, they will be invited to be recognized during the World Congress on the Basic Science of Muscle Hypertrophy and Atrophy reception, at which time the check will be presented.
