Customizing the Exercise Prescription Relative to COVID-19 Severity
January 25, 2022 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. EDT

Presenter: Cemal Ozemek, PhD, ACSM-CEP, FACSM, FAACVPR

COVID-19 has been characterized by a long list of symptoms of varying severity and the potential for these symptoms to linger indefinitely. While exercise has been widely used to bolster one’s health across various conditions, there has understandably been less clarity regarding its application across individuals recovering from a COVID-19 infection. While many individuals are able to quickly return to performing large volumes of activity, a subgroup of individuals continue to experience persistent fatigue, breathlessness, brain fog and exercise malaise which seemingly eliminates the possibility of returning to or adopting an active lifestyle. Although there is still much to learn about effectively individualizing the exercise prescription, this webinar will review current strategies and considerations for prescribing exercise to those in the post COVID-19 infection phase.

Objectives:

After participation, the attendee should:
1. understand how to characterize the severity of post COVID-infection symptoms.
2. have an understanding of tests that can be used to identify long-COVID symptoms.
3. understand the considerations for developing an exercise prescription relative to the individuals COVID infection severity.
4. have an understanding of how to guide an individual with severe long-COVID symptoms through pacing.

Take-away Points:

1. Those who experienced mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms are encouraged to gradually return to a physically active lifestyle two weeks after resolution of symptoms.
2. It is still possible for individuals who experienced mild COVID-19 symptoms to develop long COVID.
3. In the presence of post exertional malaise, moderate to vigorous exercise may be contraindicated and instead the pacing strategy should be applied.
