The Charles M. Tipton Student Research Award recognizes two students with the most outstanding research projects in exercise science of the year. Applicants are judged on the quality of the research project as well as the extent of the student’s participation in the project.  

The award includes complimentary registration to the ACSM Annual Meeting, award banquet tickets, three nights of hotel accommodations (<$350/night), meals for three days (<$75/day), airfare (<$600). Any additional cost to attend the meeting will be the responsibility of the awardee.

Established in memory of Gail E. Butterfield, Ph.D., R.D., FACSM, this award assists doctoral students (one U.S. student and one international student) with travel expenses to present their nutrition research at the ACSM Annual Meeting.  

Dr. Butterfield was a valued member of ACSM, serving as a founding member of the Nutrition Special Interest Group, an active member of five committees (pronouncements, program, awards and tributes, liaisons ad hoc, and public information), and as a trustee of ACSM. She held faculty and research positions at the University of California – Berkeley, Stanford University, and the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital.

The GSSI-ACSM Young Investigator in Sports Nutrition Award recognizes innovative, high-quality research on the impact of nutrition or hydration on exercise physiology or performance outcomes being presented at the ACSM Annual Meeting. Recognized work will be high impact science and may include applied, mechanistic, protocol development or clinical research. All work must have the potential for practical outcomes in the translation of sports nutrition science for sports health professionals and athletes.

The International Student Award recognizes research of students from countries outside of the United States and assists with travel expenses to present their scholarly work during the ACSM Annual Meeting. The awards will be determined by the quality of the research in basic or applied science.

Started in remembrance of Jack H. Wilmore, Ph.D., FACSM, the 22nd president of ACSM, this award assists doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows with travel expenses to present their research aligned with or influenced by Dr. Wilmore’s publications at the ACSM Annual Meeting. One award recognizes research presented as basic science, and one award recognizes research presented as applied science.  

Dr. Wilmore was the recipient of both the ACSM Citation and Honor Awards and served as editor-in-chief of Exercise and Sport Science Review. He was a prolific and distinguished sports medicine scholar with 317 published research articles, 55 chapters in edited books, and 15 books authored or co-authored. In addition to faculty and research positions, Dr. Wilmore was a consultant to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Rams, Lakers and Kings and the California Angels and San Francisco 49ers. 

This award is made possible by generous donations from ACSM members and friends of Dr. Wilmore and by a multi-year commitment from Human Kinetics.

Developed in honor of Michael L. Pollock, Ph.D., FACSM, the 26th president of ACSM, this fund assists graduate students with travel expenses to present their research on health and fitness and/or clinical exercise physiology at the ACSM Annual Meeting.  

Dr. Pollock transitioned from a collegiate baseball player to a groundbreaking exercise scientist under the influence of T. K. Cureton. Renowned for his unparalleled work, Dr. Pollock contributed significantly to exercise science, conducting defining studies on exercise training principles, developing widely used body composition approaches, and exploring longitudinal adaptations to exercise training and aging in runners. He paved the way for integrating gymnasium-based fitness programs into contemporary medical practice. Dr. Pollock’s later work on spinal column illnesses expanded the scope of clinical physiology, bridging gaps between cardiac rehabilitation and the physical therapy community. Dr. Pollock embodied the curiosity and inquiry of a lifelong scientist.

Established in memory or Priscilla M. Clarkson, Ph.D., FACSM, the 44th president of ACSM, the award assists undergraduate students with travel expenses to present their research at the ACSM Annual Meeting. Scientific quality will be the primary criterion for selection. Following quality, priority will be given to human-based research on topics important to Dr. Clarkson, including exercise-induced muscle damage, soreness, and adaptation; sport nutrition, dietary supplements, and performance enhancing drugs; dance; and exercise and cancer. 

Devoted to enhancing undergraduate education at a large public university, Dr. Clarkson, former Dean of the Commonwealth Honors College at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, prioritized positive mentoring throughout her career. Founder of the Muscle Biology and Imaging Lab, she contributed her expertise to NASA and the NCAA. Dr. Clarkson's research examined how muscles work when functioning properly, and what happens to muscle tissue following disuse or aging resulting from injury or atrophy.

The Science Integration & Leadership Committee (SILC) Basic Science Award recognizes excellence in student research in basic science and assists with travel expenses to present scholarly work during the ACSM Annual Meeting. The award will be determined by the overall impact and quality of the study to be presented.

Established in memory of Steven M. Horvath, Ph.D., FACSM, a longtime member and ACSM Citation Award winner, this award assists underrepresented minority graduate students with travel expenses to present their scholarly work at the ACSM Annual Meeting.

Dr. Horvath took great pride in his students, post-docs, and colleagues. He earned degrees from Oberlin College, Miami University, and Harvard University, where he met his wife, Betsy Dill. Their collaboration resulted in a book on the Harvard Fatigue Lab, complementing his extensive contributions of over 550 book chapters and scholarly articles. Throughout his career, Dr. Horvath held positions at various institutions and, in 2001, became Professor Emeritus at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. In 1971, he received the ACSM Citation Award for his significant contributions to sports medicine and exercise science.
