ACSM Webinar: Top Five Legal Liability Risks Facing Fitness Managers: Lessons Learned from Negligence Cases

February 22, 2022 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. EDT

Presenter: JoAnn M. Eickhoff-Shemek, Ph.D., FACSM, FAWHP, Professor Emeritus, Exercise Science at the University of South Florida and president of the Fitness Law Academy, LLC

Although fitness managers face many legal liability risks, this webinar will focus on five that appear to be the most common based on negligence lawsuits, such as failing to properly (a) hire, train and supervise fitness instructors (b) maintain exercise equipment, (c) manage facility risks, (d) carryout an Emergency Action Plan and follow AED statutes, and (e) comply with data privacy/security laws. Negligence cases involving these legal liability risks and the “take away” lessons fitness managers can learn from these cases will be described.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify five common legal liability risks facing fitness managers.
2. Describe how legal liability risks led to negligence lawsuits.
3. Implement effective strategies that can minimize legal liability risks.
