ACSM Names Editor-in-Chief of New Open Access Journal

Feb. 3, 2022
Gary Liguori

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is excited to announce that Gary Liguori, PhD, FACSM, has been appointed the inaugural Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the College’s new open access journal, Exercise, Sport, and Movement (ESM). Dr. Liguori was selected through a rigorous application and interview process from among a group of talented and highly qualified candidates.

Dr. Liguori is Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Professor of Kinesiology at the University of Rhode Island. Throughout his career of more than 25 years, Dr. Liguori has served on or led several national and global boards and councils, including ACSM’s Publications Committee and Committee on Certification and Registry Boards, and as a mentor in the ACSM Leadership & Diversity Training program. He has also edited many books, including as the senior editor for the first edition of ACSM’s Health Fitness Specialist Resource Guide, the fifth edition of the ACSM’s Health-Related Fitness Assessment Manual, and the 11th edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. In addition, Dr. Liguori has been an editorial board member, column editor, and most recently the Associate Editor-in-Chief of ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal®.

ESM represents an exciting opportunity for ACSM in the realm of open-access journals,” said Dr. Liguori. “Being chosen to launch this journal from scratch is a true honor, and with the support of the ACSM publishing ecosystem, and the backing of our publishing partner Wolters Kluwer, we are well poised to create an outstanding journal. ESM will be broad in its scope, but will absolutely uphold the well-deserved reputation for outstanding science that has been established by existing ACSM journals. I am excited to begin building an editorial team and receiving, reviewing, accepting, and publishing the first few articles later this spring or early summer.”

ESM is an international open access, peer-reviewed journal focusing on all aspects of exercise science and sports medicine. The scope of the journal is broad, encompassing scientific, clinical, public health, community, and policy topics in all areas related to sports and exercise medicine, exercise-related physiology, nutrition, metabolism, and physical fitness. Manuscripts addressing movement, fitness, exercise, physical activity, health promotion, sport, and prevention and treatment of injury and disease will be welcome.

The EIC is responsible for ensuring journal content reflects the mission and scope of ESM and bringing together an editorial board to support this work. As the inaugural EIC for ESM, Dr. Liguori has the unique opportunity to help build and shape this new journal into a destination for high-quality research in all areas of exercise science and sports medicine. Given his extensive publication history, broad research interests, and experience collaborating across disciplines, Dr. Liguori is well-suited to thrive in the role of EIC for ESM.

As ESM develops, additional details about the journal, when open submission begins and how to submit papers via the ESM website will be provided.
