International Women's Day (IWD), March 8, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

The theme for IWD in 2022 is #BreaktheBias, bringing attention to gender inequality, bias, stereotype and discrimination. This IWD theme challenges each of us to imagine a world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, and this year ACSM celebrates the legacy of three incredible women who have championed these themes within the college and in the scientific community.

Josephine Rathbone, Ph.D., FACSM, was the sole woman in the group of 11 founders of ACSM in 1954. Learn about how she advocated for women in sport and science during a time when when participation in sports was considered "unfeminine" and even "dangerous."

Barbara Drinkwater, Ph.D., FACSM, was the first woman elected to the position of president of ACSM. Learn about how she pioneered not only leadership roles for women, but research on female athletes.

Priscilla Clarkson, Ph.D., FACSM, was a leader in the field of skeletal muscle health research, and was a strong advocate for women in the field as well as within ACSM. Hear how she impacted not only the field, but the lives of her students.
