The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has announced the departure of CEO Jim Whitehead, who accepted a new leadership position after 29 years of distinguished service as head of the organization.
“Jim Whitehead brought an ambitious vision to ACSM and, because of his leadership, we saw that vision fulfilled,” said ACSM President Kathryn Schmitz, Ph.D., MPH, FACSM. “During his tenure, ACSM has become an influential leader and the world’s largest sports medicine and exercise science organization. We are grateful for his many contributions, and we wish him well in his new endeavor.”
As the organization’s top executive, Whitehead led ACSM’s strategic and global expansion over the last three decades, including unprecedented membership and certification growth, health and science policy efforts, a successful capital campaign, major partnerships and sponsorships, and the launch of strategic health initiatives such as Exercise is Medicine®, the American Fitness Index® and ActivEarth.
An executive search process is underway, and ACSM Chief Financial and Operating Officer Tim Calvert has been named interim CEO.
