Sandra K. Hunter, Ph.D., FACSM

ACSM is pleased to announce that Sandra K. Hunter, Ph.D., FACSM, has been selected as the next editor-in-chief (EIC) of Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews (ESSR). Dr. Hunter was selected through a rigorous application and interview search process from among a pool of exceptionally qualified candidates. Her scholarly achievements, experience in research and publications, and longstanding service to ESSR as an associate editor support her forthcoming work as EIC of ACSM’s quarterly review journal. She will work with current EIC Roger M. Enoka, Ph.D., over the next several months and will assume official duties as EIC beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

Dr. Hunter states, “I am thrilled to lead one of the flagship journals of ACSM with the support of a dynamic and committed group of associate editors. The potential impact of the information and perspectives in the ESSR reviews has been and will continue to be tremendous, providing the underlying and cutting-edge science of exercise and sport that affects all our lives. I thank Dr. Roger Enoka, who has led the journal for many years, and the other preceding EICs, who together have laid a firm foundation and upward trajectory of high-impact reviews.”

Dr. Hunter is a professor at Marquette University in the Exercise Science Program, Department of Physical Therapy, and also serves as director of the Athletic and Human Performance Research Center at Marquette. She has published more than 130 referred articles and has served as the primary advisor of 64 undergraduate students, eight doctoral students and seven postdoctoral research associates. Dr Hunter leads an active research program studying the sex and age differences in neuromuscular function, exercise performance and exercise training in healthy and clinical populations. She has received more than $13 million in grants to fund her research. Dr. Hunter joined ACSM in 2000 and became a fellow in 2005. She has served as an associate editor for Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise® since 2013 and an associate editor of ESSR for seven years.

As leader of the ESSR editorial board, the EIC has full content responsibility, ensuring that the mission, scope and core information is considered during the submission and publication of articles while working with the editorial board and journal staff.

ESSR features forward-thinking content written by invited authors either to provide the rationale for a novel hypothesis (Brief Reviews) or to summarize work on a contemporary issue and identify the key gaps in knowledge that need to be addressed to move the field forward (Perspectives for Progress). ESSR strives to provide the most relevant, topical information to students, professors, clinicians, scientists and professionals for practical and research applications.
