There is a need in higher education to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) of historically underrepresented individuals such as women and Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) at predominantly white institutions.
However, many have stated the lack of consensus between DEI terms, definitions, and that those terms are often used interchangeably [1 – 2] as barriers for DEI. In order to foster effective DEI in the Kinesiology field, it is vital to remain actively aware of the need for DEI within institutions and professional organizations. The purpose of this newsletter is to 1) restate DEI terminology, 2) present DEI institutional recommendations and initiatives in Kinesiology professional organizations, and 3) evoke self-reflection about DEI.
