Science Spotlight: Summer Webinars, New 'Move Your Way' Resources

OITE upcoming summer webinars. Starting June 5, the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE) offers training experiences for students and fellows to develop scientific and professional skills to become leaders in the biomedical research community. All events and activities are free, virtual, and require advance registration through the summer enrichment program calendar here

• Sexual and gender minority (SGM) health research series: This series is open to trainees at all levels, including those who are outside of NIH, and who are interested in learning more about SGM health research and its intersection with science, policy, communication, and community engagement. The series will meet weekly, and trainees will hear from prominent SGM health researchers and engage in panel discussions, breakout groups, and journal club discussions. Trainees can sign up for one, some, or all the sessions. A certificate of completion will be given to those who attend at least 5 of the 7 sessions. • Career Development and Science Skills: Sessions will cover topics such as creating CVs and resumes, leadership skills for scientists, job search strategies, talking science, and creating and presenting virtual posters.
• Graduate & Professional School Preparation: Covers getting into graduate school or professional (e.g., medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy) school.
• Becoming a Resilient Scientist: A series of workshops (4 weeks) that will cover wellness and resilience; self-talk (cognitive distortions and imposter fears); self-advocacy and assertiveness; and feedback resilience. Workshops for:
  • Students in college and beyond will be presented on June 8, 15, 22, and 29; each will be followed by a small group discussion on Tuesday.
  • High school students and recent graduates will be presented on July 6, 13, 20, and 27 each will be followed by a small group discussion on Tuesday.
• Summer Lecture Series: Eminent senior NIH investigators will share their science and their career paths with participants in the Summer Internship program. This series is open to everyone.
• NIH Career Development Series for Young Scientists: A series of workshops that will

  address topics of relevance to high school students and recent high school graduates. The goal is to help develop skills that will serve in a multitude of career fields. Participants who attend at least four workshops will be eligible to receive a certificate of completion.

• Graduate and Professional Fair: A live workshop on July 19^th on getting to graduate and/or professional school and two prerecorded workshops, panels, and interviews covering career paths in disciplines including public health, clinical psychology, and data science and discussing strategies for successful test-taking, stress management during application season, and improving credentials. All interested college students, postbacs, and other interested young scientists are welcome. The school fair will also include three exhibitor sessions - about participating institutions and programs (in-person exhibitor sessions, July 19, 2023; online exhibitor sessions, July 24 – August 11, 2023).

New video resources by Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. The office of ODPHP has created helpful information about Move Your Way and how community organizations can use it. The new video outlines the guiding principles of the campaign, shares the Move Your Way resources available to organizations, and includes testimonials from 3 community partners who successfully used the campaign. It also provides details about how to use the Move Your Way Community Playbook to plan and implement physical activity events. View the new video here.
