ACSM’s Healthy Youth Sports podcast releases three-part series on long-term athlete development & coaching 

The ACSM Podcast Network and National Youth Sports Health & Safety Institute (NYSHSI) has released a three-part series on the long-term development and coaching of youth athletes. Dr. Rick Howard, an assistant professor, coaching minor advisor and sports performance coordinator at West Chester University, covers: 

  • Understanding ages and stages to inform developmentally appropriate youth sports 

  • The impact of adolescent development on fitness & conditioning age and stage 

  • Matching child-centered policies to age- and stage- appropriate development in youth sport 

Along with this series, new episodes will be released every other Wednesday and are designed for coaches, administrators, parents and athletes. NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program opens January 2024 

The National Institute of Health (NIH) will open applications for the Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) dedicated to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related research. Scholarships range up to $20,000 per academic year to cover tuition, educational expenses and reasonable living costs. For every year of scholarship funding, students commit to two NIH service obligations, which provide research training and experience at the NIH. PCORI Research Funding Opportunities open Jan. 9 

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) will host several virtual applicant town halls for applicants to learn about the research funding opportunities opening in January 2024. Attendees will hear from PCORI staff about public finding announcements and how to submit letters of intent and applications for the 2024 grant cycle opportunities. ILSI annual meeting to be held Jan. 21-24 in Clearwater, FL 

The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) will host its 2024 annual meeting featuring researchers and experts on food technologies and innovations focusing on safe, nutritious and sustainable food systems Jan. 21-24, 2024. Presentations will include topics such as nutrition for healthy aging, utilizing artificial intelligence to improve food systems and sustainable food practices. 2023 Bloomberg American Health Summit available for viewing 

The John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health convened public health practitioners, policymakers, community organizations and Bloomberg fellows in Baltimore to explore connections and partnerships to advance health and equity across the country. Sessions covered strategies for preventing overdose deaths, ways to improve the U.S. food system, solutions to improve the youth criminal justice system and public health approaches to violence prevention.
