The statement covers musculoskeletal injuries frequently occurring in sport during practice, training and competition, along with injury assessment and management responsibilities common for the team physician. This statement is 23rd in a series of annual consensus statements written for the practicing team physician as an annual project-based alliance of six major professional associations (AAFP, AAOS, AMSSM, AOSSSM, AOASM, AOASM). The goal of this document is to help the team physician improve the care and treatment of the athlete by understanding the initial assessment and management of selected musculoskeletal injuries.
ACSM Executive Committee Representatives Stanley Herring, M.D.; Margot Putukian, M.D.; and W. Ben Kibler, M.D. organized and gathered the distinguished panel of team physicians for the annual conference to address select medical issues in the care and treatment of athletes.
The annual conference partners include: the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine and the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. The group meets annually to produce a consensus statement, which is a blend of research evidence and expert consensus. The resulting documents serve as guidance and teaching tools for physicians working in the sports medicine field, regardless of geographical location or level of team or athlete.
